What is a Registered Agent?

A registered agent, also known as a resident agent or statutory agent, is a person or organization that is designated to receive official legal and tax documents on behalf of a business.

The registered agent is responsible for receiving and forwarding these documents, such as service of process papers in the event of a lawsuit, to the appropriate person within the company.

They also receive documents such as state annual reports, franchise tax reports, or other required filings. The registered agent must have a physical street address (not a P.O. box) within the state of incorporation and be available during normal business hours to receive these documents.

Most virtual mailbox platforms and legal companies offer registered agent services as well.
